I have natural wavy curly thick hair, how can I tong it?

I want the look were your hair is glossy and straight towards the top but ringlets towards the bottom.I have no problem using straightners to get straight hair. But cannot get this look at all!I have a small barrelled tong is this where I am going wrong? any tips on how to achieve?|||Have your stylist spend some time with you at your next appt.
